Axie Classic Champions Invitational Winner Crowned As Sky Mavis Moves Axie Classic To Community-Run CORC

Sky Mavis ran its last Axie Classic tournament on Sunday. Eight qualifiers from Seasons 13 to 16 played the Champions Invitational, a double-elimination bracket, and Mitsuya took the title, beating Mark in the grand final and taking 2,100 of the 5,000 bAXS prize pool. ^{[1] [2] [3]} Sky Mavis had called Season 16 the final competitive season under its direct structure, with one more Championship and this Invitational left for it to run before stepping back. Classic is set to pass to CORC, the Classic Origins Resurrection Committee that Axie Governance has already formed. ^[4] AXS rose 16.1% in the week to Sunday, closing at $1.17.

What the token actually does

AXS is the governance token of the Axie games. Staked AXS earns rewards and, together with a player’s Axie Score, sets their voting power over the Axie Treasury. ^[8] Since February most of its everyday uses run through bAXS, which is valued one to one with AXS but can only be spent inside Axie and can’t be traded or transferred. bAXS pays for breeding, ascension, evolution, forging and Runes and Charms, and staked bAXS carries the same voting weight as staked AXS. Rewards in Classic, Origins and Terrariums are now paid in it, including Sunday’s pool. ^[9] Converting bAXS back to AXS costs a fee that goes to the Treasury, and the rate depends on Axie Score: in Sky Mavis’s own example, a Mythkeeper receives 82.5 AXS for 100 bAXS. ^[10]

Protos wrote about Axie Infinity on the 25th of August 2026, in a list of NFT predictions that aged badly. ^[11] Citation Needed reported on the 17th of April 2025 that the Securities and Exchange Commission alleged, in its lawsuits against Coinbase and Binance, that AXS was among the unregistered securities the exchanges sold. ^[12] The same piece recalled the $625 million Axie Infinity exploit by North Korean hackers in March 2022. ^[12]

In its lawsuits against Coinbase and Binance, the Securities and Exchange Commission listed Axie Infinity’s $AXS token and The Sandbox’s $SAND token among the unregistered securities they alleged the exchanges had listed.

The handover still has a legal step to go. Sky Mavis said CORC is funded from the ecosystem fund for now and moves to the Community Treasury over time, and that the transition begins once the legal work to hand over Classic’s IP and infrastructure closes. ^[4] Classic’s last prize money was paid in bAXS, which can’t be sold without converting it to AXS and paying a fee to the Axie Treasury, 17.5% at the Mythkeeper rank Sky Mavis used as its example. ^[10] Staking rewards come from a budget that is mostly spent: Sky Mavis said in November 2025 that about 95% had been paid out, and what remains shrinks by 5% every nine days. ^[15] Spending from the Axie Treasury goes to a vote: AIP-003, the November 2025 proposal to stake its roughly 2,829 ETH, needed 66% of votes to pass, with no voter allowed more than 10% of voting power. ^[16]
