Decentraland (MANA) Blocks Sales of 1,512 Stolen NFTs as DAO Votes Down a Names Freeze

Most of the 1,512 NFTs were Names, the usernames of Decentraland avatars. On the 1st of October 2026, DAO voters turned down freezing every Name.

A screenshot from Decentraland shows a stylized avatar standing in front of large text that reads "1,512 DECENTRALAND NFTS STOLEN", with other avatars and a game kiosk labeled "SAMMICH GAME" visible in the colorful, park-like background.

On the 26th of September 2026, Decentraland engineer Ignacio Mazzara updated Decentraland’s marketplace so no one could buy, bid on or rent 1,512 NFTs there. His update said they were stolen in the Limit Break Payment Processor V2 exploit. [1] Most were Names, the usernames people give their avatars. There were 1,483 of those. The rest were 11 parcels of LAND, 2 Estates, which are groups of parcels, and 16 wearables, the items avatars wear. [1] [2] MANA rose 9.1% from the close of the 23rd of September 2026 to the close of the 26th of September 2026, from $0.08272 to $0.09024. The wider gaming market, the Gaming Token Index – Composite, rose 6.0% over the same days.

This only covers the marketplace UI: the items can still be traded on-chain or elsewhere. [1]

MANA is Decentraland’s currency, used to buy LAND, Names and other digital items. [2] Holding MANA, Names or LAND also lets people create and vote on proposals in the Decentraland DAO. A vote counts for more when the voter holds more MANA, Names and LAND. [3] Decentraland is a free-to-play virtual world where users create, explore and trade.

The freeze poll drew replies on Decentraland’s forum from the 26th to the 28th of September 2026. A user named JasonX wrote that they had lost more than 1,000 Names. Others argued against a freeze, and one wrote that it seemed unfair to punish all Name holders. [4]

I’ve lost all my DCL names over 1,000+ due to Magic Eden Limit Break Hack along with many others. [4]

JasonX, on the Decentraland forum, the 26th of September 2026

The exploit did not compromise any of Decentraland’s own contracts; it exploited the outdated approvals on Magic Eden. If we decide to rewind ownership on the basis of an external marketplace failure, I believe it would become extremely difficult to draw a clear line for any potential future incidents. [4]

More on the story

Before the update, a Decentraland DAO poll had asked for an investigation. It also asked for a freeze of all Names activity where possible. [4] A second poll proposed a new Names contract, built from a snapshot taken before the theft. [5] Both polls closed on the 1st of October 2026 with most of the voting power against them. Seven voters backed the freeze with 32% of the voting power, while three voters holding 67% voted no. [4] The second poll lost by 69% to 31%. [5] Magic Eden said on the 25th of September 2026 that it stopped using Payment Processor V2 in October 2024. It said NFTs listed on its marketplace from about February to October 2024 could be affected. It told those users to take back the contract’s permission to move their NFTs, though this would not return tokens that had already moved. [6]
