Portal Coin News: Another Gaming Token Turns to AI Game Making

PORTAL began as a gaming coin. Portal now makes AI game tools, and it has not said when its planned PORTAL buybacks will start.

PORTAL: a creator and a robot build a game level

On the 14th of October 2026, Portal said its Gen8 game maker was fully live. [1] Gen8 turns a written prompt into a 2D game that runs in a web browser. [2] In February 2024, Portal’s website called PORTAL a “Universal Gaming Coin” that players could use in games. [3] On the 21st of April 2026, Portal said its complete focus would now be AI tools for making games. [4] It said money from those tools would pay for buybacks of PORTAL. [5] On the 22nd of April 2026, it said the buybacks would start once the tools were live and bringing in demand. They would not come from tokens Portal already held. [6] Portal has not said how much its AI tools have brought in, or when the buybacks will start. On the 18th of April 2026, Portal said it would make “BIG changes” to its ecosystem the next week. [7] Since that post, PORTAL has risen 52.4%, from $0.00960 to $0.01463 on the 19th of October 2026, while the wider gaming market fell 22.6%. Since Portal’s move to AI tools on the 21st of April 2026, it has risen 5.5%, while the wider gaming market fell 20.9%.

Revenue from our AI tools will power a sustainable flywheel via periodic token buybacks. [5]

What the token actually does

PORTAL: Gen8 Fast lists about 38 Shards
PORTAL: Gen8 Fast lists about 38 Shards (Portal on X, the 14th of October 2026)

PORTAL is not mentioned in Portal’s Gen8 posts or in its terms for Shards, the in-app credits Gen8 runs on. [2] [8] Portal said making a game was free. A screenshot in its post of the 14th of October 2026 lists about 38 Shards for the Gen8 Fast option. [1] People can buy Shards, and Portal’s terms say a payment company such as Stripe handles the purchases. [8] The Portal Shop also takes card payments for gift cards and game top-ups. [9] In a buyback, a project buys its own token back from the market. Portal has not said what share of its AI tools’ revenue would go to buying back PORTAL, or how big a buyback would be. Gen8 pays weekly leaderboard prizes of up to $10 in Shards. [10] [11] Shards cannot be cashed out, and Portal’s terms let it take them back if it suspects abuse. [8]

Portal also said on the 21st of April 2026 that PORTAL holders would get early access, premium tools and a vote. [5] On the 3rd of August 2026, it said it was picking 20 creators who applied to get early access to Gen8. That post did not mention the token. [12] Portal has not said what early access PORTAL holders get.

More on the story

Portal said on the 10th of February 2026 that it had a new team, with long-term backing from Animoca Brands. [13] On the 18th of February 2026, it said it was buying 5% of Cross the Ages’ CTA token and signing a letter of intent to become the game’s publisher. [14] On the 30th of March 2026, Portal said it was developing “agentic” gaming tools for developers and studios. Agentic tools use AI agents to carry out tasks. [15] On the 21st of April 2026, it said the new team was made up entirely of representatives of Animoca Brands. [16] On the 12th of October 2026, Portal said it had passed 2,000 users across Gen8, Nexus and Shop. [17] It did not say how many of them had paid for Shards.

Portal is not the only gaming project to turn to AI. Yield Guild Games, a guild of crypto gamers, closed its YGG Play games business by the 1st of August 2026. It said on the 6th of July 2026 that it would put its resources into what it called the AI data economy. The post did not say what happens to the YGG token. [18] Somnia built its chain for games and virtual worlds. On the 1st of September 2026, it said it had moved its focus to crypto trading and lending, prediction markets and apps built for AI agents. [19] In a vote that closed on the 30th of August 2025, Treasure’s MAGIC stakers chose to end its Bridgeworld game. The MAGIC that was set to go to Bridgeworld from then on would go to a marketing fund aimed at AI influencers. [20] On the 2nd of October 2026, Treasure said MAGIC would become “a governance-less natural resource connecting worlds”, as Treasure prepared a network for AI agents. [21]

Not every gaming project has moved away from games. Ronin said on the 13th of May 2026 that it was the gaming chain, and that it would keep using RON to pay network fees. [22] The Sandbox built The Sandbox Studio, a set of AI tools for making games. In an interview The Sandbox posted on the 31st of August 2026, its chief executive, Robby Yung, said the goal was not to automate game creation. [23]

Binance has kept a warning label on PORTAL since the 7th of May 2025. It calls the label a Monitoring Tag. [24] Binance said tokens with the tag are notably more volatile and risky than other tokens it lists, and could be delisted. [24] Traders there must pass a quiz every 90 days to trade them. [24] The tag was still on PORTAL on the 20th of October 2026. [25] In a Q&A on the 20th of May 2026, Portal said there was no shortcut to getting the token off the list. It said the answer was building tools people will use. [26]
