Spellborne is a free monster-catching RPG you can play in your browser or on your phone. Here's how it plays and where the crypto parts fit in.
Spellborne is a free monster-catching RPG with a cozy pixel-art look, and you can play it in your browser or on your phone [1]. You pick one of three hunters, catch monsters, grow crops and make new friends along the way [2]. There’s a crypto side too, with monsters you can turn into NFTs and a token called BORNE, but those parts are extras you can pick up later. Here’s what the game is, how it plays and where the crypto fits in.

Spellborne plays a lot like the monster-collecting games many of us grew up with. You’re one of three kids who arrive in Yorokobi Town, and from there you set out to uncover the secrets of a world called Celestia [1]. The monsters are called Mons. You build a squad, train them up and fight in turn-based battles. Along the way you run into two rival groups, Team Crux and The Order, plus the Guardians [1].
The game is made by Mon Studios. It started life under the name Defimons before the team renamed it Spellborne [3].
A classic monster-catching adventure in pixel art, with crypto as an optional extra.

You’ve got a few choices. Spellborne runs in a web browser on PC, and it has apps on Google Play and the Apple App Store [4]. The phone apps arrived in July 2025. Before that, iPhone players had to play through Safari [5]. The game is free to download [1], and an Epic Games Store version is listed as coming soon in early access [2].

Catching and battling is the heart of it, but there’s plenty to do between fights. You can farm, mine rocks and go fishing [1]. Fishing has its own mini-game. You cast a rod with bait, earn fishing XP and unlock new kinds of fish as you level up [5]. You can also unlock and mutate your Mons to make them stronger [1].
Breeding is another big one. You pair a male and a female Mon from the same egg group, like Grass, Water or Flying, and drop them off at the daycare. The egg usually hatches in a few hours, and the baby’s stats land somewhere between its parents’ stats [6]. Special items called anklets let you lock in a parent’s best stat or pass a move down to the baby [6].
If you like competition, there are PvP tournaments, and you can join a guild to play with other people [1]. A guild lives in an apartment that works as its home base, with a shared store and guild wars to fight in. To start your own guild, you need an apartment, which you can also rent from another player, plus some BORNE [7].

This is where the crypto part starts. Since the end of October 2025, you can mint the Mons you catch into NFTs and trade them in the Monster Marketplace, either inside the game or on outside markets [8]. The marketplace works across two blockchains, Avalanche and Abstract, and it has a built-in bridge so players on both chains can trade with each other [8].
Minting costs a fee that goes up for newer accounts, for breeds that already have lots of copies and for players who mint very fast. The team says the fee is there to stop spam and bots [8]. One tip from the team is worth remembering. Don’t send monster NFTs straight to a wallet the game doesn’t support, because they can get stuck there for good [8].
BORNE is Spellborne’s in-game token. It went live on August 29, 2025, on the Blackhole exchange on the Avalanche blockchain, and players claim it inside the game [9]. It’s a utility token, which means it’s for using in the game rather than voting on how the game is run. You use it to mint and trade monsters, craft items, set up guilds and earn PvP rewards [4].
Players have earned BORNE through the game’s seasons. When Season 2 ended, the team set aside BORNE rewards for the top 5,000 players and paid them out slowly over six months [10]. The same post explained a Reputation Score that can shrink a player’s rewards if they sell a lot of BORNE without spending any back in the game [10].

When Season 2 wrapped up, Mon Studios said it plans to move past seasons into a new phase called Open Play [10]. In Open Play, more rewards come straight from what you do in the game, like trading in the Bazaar and the Monster Marketplace, opening PvP chests in the leagues and entering tournaments with prizes [10].
Mon Studios has also said BORNE will be used in its future games, including one called Guardians of Celestia [4]. For now, Spellborne is a free monster catcher you can play on your phone or in your browser, and the crypto side stays optional until you decide to try it.
