Proof of Play announced on August 4, 2026, via X that it is ceasing operations. The studio says it will open-source its code, art, and IP, while the Pirate Nation Foundation will keep supporting the $PIRATE token [1]. This news comes after a period of apparent expansion: the studio launched the mobile roguelite Shiba Story Go! in March 2026, and also worked with OthersideMeta to bring Pirate Nation avatars as playable characters in February 2026 [2][3]. Those projects now face an uncertain future as Proof of Play winds down its operations.

Let’s take a look at what people are saying about Pirate Nation. Despite the art, the real test has been in the player experience [4]. Proof of Play Shutdown

Let’s leave the token talk behind and get to the interesting part. Proof of Play just dropped some heavy news on X: it’s ceasing operations. The studio behind Pirate Nation, backed by a16z, said it couldn’t build a product and a sustainable business. It says it couldn’t prove that its blockchain-gaming idea would work at scale. So instead, the studio is making its assets open source.

That means the Pirate Nation Unity app, the smart contracts, the Founder Pirates NFTs, and all the artwork, IP, and logos are now on GitHub. They are under a CC0 license. They even threw in an internal agent workflow tool they used to build software with small teams. Now anyone can poke around the guts of this web3 game.

As for the rest: the Pirate Nation Foundation, which is independent from Proof of Play, will keep supporting the $PIRATE token. Proof of Play points aren’t redeemable for anything, so they’re just digital memories. Shiba Story Go! got picked up by a third party and will keep running on its own.

It’s a strange ending for a game that bet big on a decentralized internet. But with the code and art out in the wild, the adventure isn’t fully over. It just turned into something else. Ngl, it’s a pretty wild move.
